Fly Fishing in Palencia, Spain

Wide rivers, clear light, and the quiet rhythm of the plateau.

The quiet soul of the plateau

Palencia doesn’t boast, it breathes.
Between golden fields and endless poplar groves, the Carrión, Pisuerga, and Rívera rivers cross a land shaped by calm and memory.

For decades, this was a mining province of smoke, iron, and coal. Today the noise is gone, and what remains is a silence that fills everything.
In its villages you can still sense a busy past, but now it is the water and the wind that tell the stories.

To fish in Palencia is to follow the river’s memory, quiet and steady like time itself.

Rivers and Seasons in Palencia

In Palencia everything depends on water.
Above the reservoirs the Pisuerga, Carrión, and Rivera run fast and cold through mountains and pine forests.
Up there the fishing is intense, with lively currents and trout that never give you a break.

Once the rivers leave the reservoirs and reach the plateau, the landscape changes.
The water widens, slows down, and becomes clear.
Here every cast requires patience and every drift follows the rhythm of the air.

The fishing season runs from April to mid October and it clearly splits in two.
While there is water, it is best to go up to the mountains during May and June, and with some luck July and August if the year has been generous.
Before the reservoirs open, in May and June, the lower stretches can also be fished again in September and October.

To fish in Palencia is to follow that cycle, moving with the water and understanding that every section has its own time.
